A BRIEF HISTORY OF THAXTED BOWLING CLUB

Following a public meeting held in the Guildhall on the 25th May 1965 it was agreed that a Bowling Club be formed. Nominations were taken from those present for the positions of President, Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, and 14 committee members were nominated and elected. The two main tasks for the new committee were to find a suitable site and raise enough finances.
The site had to have a minimum sixty year lease to qualify for any available grants i.e. National Playing Fields and Essex County Playing Fields. Our first President Mr R.T. Barnard kindly offered us a piece of his land at very generous terms which was gratefully accepted.

Fund raising was in full flow and a multitude of events were held including such diverse functions as Car Treasure Hunts, Barn Dances, Raffles, Traction Engine Rally, Easter Monday Fayre (held in 1968, preceded on Good Friday by several snow showers) all to reach our target of 25,000. Originally the aim was to obtain a sectional building for a club house but on hearing of the cost of such a building three members Messrs Drane, Hitching and Thake offered to build a bricks and mortar building for the same cost. The building when erected was one of the most modern bowls clubhouses in Essex and set the standard for many clubs.

The first committee meeting was held in the new clubhouse on the 16th May 1969 when the treasurer's report informed us that our current debt was 13,000. To reach that stage had required many hours of voluntary work and the same is still required today to maintain our facilities. During this beginning there were many pleasant hours of fun and some minor disasters.

Old and new bowlers of all ages are very welcome to join Thaxted Bowling Club and qualified tuition is available for novices.
